Protecting genetic diversity to benefit nature and society

Key strategies and recent developments for protecting genetic diversity

Genetic diversity is essential for species survival, adaptation, and ecological resilience. Despite its importance, genetic diversity is declining globally.

In a recent journal article in Open Access Government, we outline three ways that governments and other conservation actors can monitor and protect genetic diversity, by:

  1. Using genetic indicators

  2. Embedding genetic diversity targets into national legislation/policy

  3. Recognizing Indigenous Peoples and local communities

...the potential to better safeguard genetic diversity has reached a pivotal moment. The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), adopted in December 2022 at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15), recognizes and commits to conserving and restoring genetic diversity.
