Genes from space and BON in a box

The CBD’s Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework includes targets for genetic diversity. However, assessing these across many species remains a challenge.

Genetic diversity indicators measure a species’ ability to adapt to change and are crucial for preventing extinctions. New indicators focus on using genetic sequence data and proxies that can be monitored more efficiently and translated into policy. Earth observation data (e.g., satellite, drone, or aerial data) can be combined with on-the-ground data to scale up monitoring efforts. Tools for this will soon be publicly accessible in GEO BON’s BON in a Box.

A team of experts from the International Space Science Institute is currently working on integrating Earth observation data into genetic diversity monitoring, to inform conservation efforts and policy. Follow the link below to learn more.
